FAO extends modular grain storage support to Chernihivska oblast

0 1

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, is extending its programme for the distribution of modular grain storage units to Chernihivska oblast. As part of this new phase, 54 modular storage units will be provided to eligible agricultural producers in the region. The expansion aims to support local farmers to safeguard their harvests and strengthen the resilience of local food systems, reported by SEEDS.

To qualify for assistance, farmers have to cultivate between 200 and 1 000 hectares of officially registered land in Chernihivska oblast that is actively used for agricultural production. The storage units are intended to help producers preserve their own harvested grain, reduce post-harvest losses, and address the shortage of storage capacity caused by the destruction of agricultural infrastructure. Farmers who wish to participate in the programme are encouraged to submit their applications through the State Agrarian Registry (SAR) by 21 April 2025.

This extension builds on the initial phase of the programme, which was open for registration through the SAR from 28 February to 19 March 2025 for farmers from Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska, Khersonska, Kirovohradska, Mykolaivska and Odeska oblasts.

During the initial registration window, 675 farmers from the targeted oblasts submitted their applications to FAO through the State Agrarian Registry.

FAO then carried out a thorough review and verification process, including data validation through SAR, direct phone calls to applicants, and follow-up communication by FAO’s hotline and third-party monitors. As a result of the review, 561 farmers successfully met the eligibility criteria and were confirmed to receive support under the programme. The remaining applications could not be considered due to factors such as incomplete information, land size outside the required range or prior participation in the programme in 2024.

In total, FAO, with financial support from the Governments of Canada and Japan, will distribute 615 modular storage units to agricultural producers in Chernihivska, Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska, Khersonska, Kirovohradska, Mykolaivska and Odeska oblasts. Each selected farmer will receive one 1 000-tonne storage unit per farm, helping ensure their harvested grain can be safely preserved for later use or sale.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to help Ukrainian farmers overcome storage capacity gaps, safeguard food security and maintain the stability of agricultural production in the face of ongoing challenges.
