FAO will support farmers from Khersonska oblast with modular storage units
The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine announce the start of registration for modular warehouses with a capacity of 300, 500 and 1000 tonnes, written by SEEDS.
This initiative is part of the Grain Storage Support Strategy, implemented with generous financial support from Canada and Japan, along with the Australian charitable organization Minderoo Foundation.
Following the success of previous interventions, where Ukrainian farmers received support in the form of grain sleeves and supporting equipment during 2022 and early 2023, FAO is now set to deliver longer-term solutions. The focus will be on supporting small and medium-sized farms in Khersonska oblast, reinforcing the agricultural sector’s resilience and sustainability in the region.
“This initiative is crucial to ensure the availability of storage capacity for Ukrainian grain and oilseed producers, especially those operating in the most-affected Khersonska oblast. The long-term impact will contribute to sustaining global food supplies, reinforcing food security, and protecting livelihoods at both household and national levels,” noted Pierre Vauthier, head of FAO Ukraine country office.
In total, FAO and the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food plan to distribute 244 modular storage units. These grain storage facilities will be accessible to agricultural producers cultivating land in Khersonska oblast. The allocation of modular storage units to individual farmers will be determined based on the number of applications received and the proportion of the cultivated land.
To be eligible for the programme, farmers must have the land area under official cultivation in Khersonska oblast from 100 hectares, and use the received equipment to store their own harvested products.
Applications will be accepted for three weeks until 21 January 2024. After processing and analyzing all received applications, programme participants will receive confirmation of assistance through the SAR and will be notified of the delivery time.
Due to the limited quantity of modular storage units, completion and submission of the request is not a guarantee of support and is subject to FAO’s evaluation criteria and final selection decision.
